Electrician interview prep: safety, code, and the questions that matter

Answer with STAR, not scripts
S — Situation
Set the scene in one or two sentences. What was the job, the conditions?
T — Task
What were you responsible for? What was at stake?
A — Action
What did you specifically do — especially safety steps you took. This is the part interviewers score hardest.
R — Result
What happened? Fixed right, reported immediately, learned the lesson.
Prepare 4–6 STAR stories before the interview: a safety decision, a mistake you owned, a troubleshooting win, pressure or difficult conditions, teamwork with a crew, and learning something new on the job. Most behavioral questions map onto one of these.

These are frameworks, not scripts. Learn the structure, bring your own real experience, and answer like a person.
Question 1
Walk me through your lockout/tagout procedure.
How to answer: They're testing whether you have a real procedure, not a vague answer. Describe the full sequence: notify affected employees, shut down equipment, isolate all energy sources, apply your personal lock and tag, release stored energy, verify zero energy with a meter you trust. Mention testing before touching — 'trust the meter, not the assumption.' Never describe shortcuts.
Question 2
What do you do if a supervisor asks you to work energized?
How to answer: This is a character question with one right answer: you don't. Say you'd stop the work, explain the hazard, and propose the de-energized alternative — reschedule the task, use proper PPE and permits only if the situation genuinely qualifies for justified energized work. Interviewers want someone who will push back on unsafe orders, even from a boss.

How do you troubleshoot a circuit that's dead?
How to answer: Show a methodical process, not random guessing: start at the panel (breaker tripped?), then work outward — check GFCI/AFCI resets, switches, splices, and terminations, verifying voltage at each step. Explain that you isolate before you replace, and that you'd use your multimeter rather than swapping parts blindly. Apprentice or journeyman, the systematic approach is what scores.

What's your experience with the National Electrical Code?
How to answer: Be honest about your level. Apprentices: name what you've studied (NEC articles you've worked with — box fill, conductor sizing, grounding) and how you look things up. Journeymen: describe how you apply the code on the job and keep up with edition changes. Saying 'I check the code book rather than guessing' is a strength, not a weakness — nobody has the whole NEC memorized.
Question 5
Tell me about a time you made a mistake on the job.
How to answer: Use STAR: what went wrong (miswired a switch, misread a print, cut a conductor too short), that you stopped and reported it immediately instead of hiding it, what you did to fix it, and what you changed so it won't repeat (double-checking prints, verifying before energizing). In electrical work, hiding a mistake can kill someone — owning it is the entire point of this question.
Question 6
What tools do you bring, and what do you carry every day?
How to answer: Name your actual kit: multimeter (and that you test it before and after on a known source), insulated hand tools, wire strippers, fish tape, level, and your PPE (safety glasses, gloves, arc-rated clothing when required). Then make the point: the tools matter less than their condition — inspect before use, calibrate the meter, and retire damaged insulation.

How do you read and follow electrical prints and one-line diagrams?
How to answer: Describe your process: review the full set before starting (don't just look at your page), identify circuits and loads, check symbols against the legend, confirm device schedules match the drawings, and flag conflicts with the foreman before you install. Include that you verify in the field — drawings and buildings don't always agree.

Why should we hire you — what do you bring as an apprentice?
How to answer: Apprentices get hired on reliability, attitude, and aptitude, not skill. Say it directly: you'll show up on time every day, take direction, stay off your phone, ask questions instead of guessing, and study the code on your own time. If you have construction experience, helper work, or relevant school projects, name them. Journeymen: add your license status and the work you can run independently.
Question 9
How do you handle working in uncomfortable or difficult conditions?
How to answer: Electrical work happens in attics, crawlspaces, weather, and on lifts. The answer: you do the work safely and without complaint — but you also protect the work quality. Describe how you plan for conditions (hydration, proper ladder setup, pausing when fatigue makes you error-prone), because the interviewer is checking that you'll both show up and not get sloppy.

Where are you in your licensing path?
How to answer: State exactly where you are: apprentice hours completed (or enrolled in an apprenticeship program), journeyman license held in which states, master license, or any specialty endorsements. Don't round up or imply a license you don't hold — licensing is public record, and shops will check. If you're pre-apprenticeship, say what concrete steps you've taken: applied to programs, completed a pre-apprenticeship course, studying the code.

Instead, memorize your stories and frameworks: the situation, the key steps, the outcome. Then answer naturally. The frameworks above are designed for exactly this — structure without scripts.
- Can I get an electrician job with no experience?
- Yes, as an apprentice — that's how most electricians start. Shops and union locals hire apprentices based on reliability, aptitude, and attitude rather than skill. Strengthen your position before applying: complete a pre-apprenticeship program if one exists near you, study basic electrical theory and the NEC, and be ready to explain exactly where you are in the licensing path.
